Set atop the rolling hills of Tuscany, Podere Poggi offers a refined interpretation of the traditional Tuscan farmhouse. Surrounded by panoramic views of the Val d’Orcia countryside, the 17th century estate blends historic character with contemporary design, creating a retreat designed for long alfresco lunches, slow mornings by the pool, and effortless connection to nature.

We spoke with the owner about discovering the villa by chance, reimagining the property through a more modern lens, and the places in Tuscany they believe every guest should experience.

What first drew you to this part of Tuscany, and what made this the villa you wanted to restore and call your own?

It is often said that destiny has a way of guiding us. My encounter with the villa occurred serendipitously during the Christmas season of 2019. Initially, I had secured a chalet in the French Alps, only to later discover that it was a fraudulent arrangement.

With insufficient time remaining to locate an alternative in the mountains, I redirected my search to Tuscany and subsequently rented the villa.

I had long considered acquiring property in Tuscany, though without strong conviction. What ultimately captivated me was the villa’s location and its breathtaking views, an irreplaceable aspect of any real estate venture.

During my stay, I was informed that the villa was for sale. I expressed my interest in February 2020, and the contract was signed in June.

The villa balances contemporary interiors with traditional Tuscan character beautifully. What was the design philosophy behind the home?

From the outset, I recognized that the villa required a significant restyling. I undertook renovations across both the interiors and the garden, including the pool area.

My vision was to create a space that would appeal to high end travelers seeking an alternative to the traditional rustic Tuscan farmhouse. I wanted a more modern design concept while still preserving key elements of Tuscan architecture.

Throughout the villa, exposed wood beams, aged parquet flooring, and natural materials are paired with contemporary furnishings and refined finishes to create a home that feels both timeless and fresh.

What is your favorite space in the villa?

I particularly enjoy spending time by the pool, whether relaxing or reading. It’s a space that allows me to fully disconnect while taking in the surrounding landscape.

With panoramic views stretching across the Tuscan hills, it’s one of those places where time naturally slows down.

What do you enjoy most about the location, and what can guests expect to discover nearby?

The villa enjoys an exceptional location, perfectly positioned between Siena and the villages of the Val d’Orcia, including Montalcino, Pienza, and Montepulciano.

The setting itself is remarkable, offering uninterrupted 360 degree views over the surrounding countryside. Guests can immerse themselves in Tuscany’s rich culture, historic towns, vineyards, and landscapes while still enjoying complete tranquility back at the villa.

Are there any standout amenities or experiences that make the villa unique?

During the renovation process, I wanted to create spaces designed around connection and shared experiences.

In addition to the heated infinity pool and hot tub, we built a bocce court, which naturally brings people together. Social dining was also central to the vision for the property.

The villa features a large outdoor dining table, an alfresco kitchen, a pizza oven, and a barbecue, creating the perfect setting for long summer dinners with family and friends.

What kind of experience do you hope guests have during their stay?

I hope guests experience a balance of relaxation and connection, whether that’s unwinding by the pool, enjoying long walks, or simply sharing meals together.

For me, some of the most meaningful moments at the villa come from gathering with family and friends around the table, often with the help of our talented private chefs who prepare unforgettable dinners at the property.

Can you share a memory at the villa that truly captures its atmosphere?

Some of my favorite moments are often the simplest ones, spending the day outdoors, taking long walks through the countryside, or exploring the surrounding landscapes by e bike.

These are the experiences where you can truly appreciate the beauty of Tuscany at your own pace.

Do you have any hidden gems in the region that you always recommend to guests?

I highly recommend visiting the remarkable abbeys nearby, including Abbey of Sant’Antimo, Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, and Abbey of San Galgano, as well as the nearby Montesiepi Chapel, known for its legendary sword in the stone.

These are truly special places that many visitors overlook.

Food is such an important part of travel. What are some of your favorite local restaurants?

My favorite restaurant is Locanda Paradiso, a place that feels almost magical.

Located in the medieval village of Chiusure, around 30 minutes from the villa, it’s the perfect setting for a long alfresco lunch overlooking the Tuscan hills. The atmosphere feels wonderfully authentic and untouched by mass tourism, while the cuisine celebrates the simplicity and richness of Tuscan cooking.

What are some of the must do experiences for guests staying at the villa?

The surrounding region offers endless opportunities to experience the real Tuscany.

For culture and history, I recommend visiting Buonconvento, considered one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. To the north, Siena is famous for the Palio horse race, its Gothic cathedral, and the iconic Piazza del Campo.

To the south, guests can discover Montalcino and its Brunello wines, Pienza, the birthplace of Pope Pius II, and Bagno Vignoni, known for its ancient thermal baths.

Further afield, destinations like San Quirico d’Orcia, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, and Volterra each offer their own distinct character, history, and charm, making this one of the most rewarding regions in Italy to explore slowly.
